Short tutorial

This is a short tutorial on playing Spice Trade game. After reading this, you should be familiar with the basic game concepts.

Step 1

Start the game by either double clicking on the Spicetrade.jar file, or running the Command Line Interface (CLI) command java -jar Spicetrade.jar in the same directory where you have the game.

Step 2

Now that the game is running, you can see the intro. You can skip the intro by clicking the SKIP INTRO link in the top left corner of the game screen.

Step 3

Now you should be seeing the start menu, where you will find the following options:

Click on the Start game link to start the game.

You can access the start menu anytime if you wish to restart your game.

Step 4

After starting the game, the Storyteller starts to talk with you and tells you a little bit about who and where you are. Click on the Ok choice in the right side of the text to continue.

The storyteller keeps you informed on major happenings in the game.

Step 5

You are now home and you are still talking with the Storyteller. He is giving you some advice about how you might want to go on. Choose one of the choices on the right side of the text to receive a little more detail on the advice.

Choose Ok once you have read the advice of the Storyteller and then you will be at your home, in the living room.

By the by, notice the little white icons in the top right hand corner of the game screen? Here is what the do:

You can rest at your home by entering the bedroom, through the left door in your living room. The resting can be done by clicking on the pillow in the bedroom and choosing how long you want to sleep.

You can also run your mouse over age to see a clarification of the time units shown.

Step 6

Now before we continue on to the city of Baghdad, please click on the picture of Abu al-Qazzaz, in the lower left corner of the screen.

The window that just opened is your status screen. Here you can see an overview of your Status, access your Inventory, see the open and done quests in the Diary, browse the Help index, read a Log about your past events and discussions and also check out the Culture situation in the world.

Click on the Close link to close the status window.

Remeber to check your Diary for open quests.

Step 7

After you have closed the status screen, click on the city map icon, which you can see on the right side of the picture of Abu.

You travel inside cities using the city map, which can always be accessed by clicking on the city map icon. Explore the city with your mouse, you can enter most of the buildings by clicking on one of them.

Placing your mouse cursor on top of links shows you more information.

Step 8

Enter the Bazaar of Baghdad by clicking on the yellowish building close to the center of the Baghdad city map.

Once in the Bazaar, you can see the merchant. Click on the merchant to do business with him. Running your mouse cursor over people and items you can see, shows you who and what you can interact with.

Buying and selling is done using the shop window. On the left side, you can see what the merchant can sell to you and on the right side you can see what items you have that interest the merchant.

Please note that not everyone sells or buys everything.

You can buy and sell items by clicking on them and then confirming the transaction by clicking on the Buy/Sell link that appears under the merchants name in the shop window. Buy a few seeds of Saffron from the merchant.

The amount of money you have at the beginning of the game depends on the difficulty level you chose.

Step 9

Now that we are the proud owners of some seeds of Saffron, we can go grow the spices on our fields. Click on the city map icon to access the city map of Baghdad and then go to your fields, which can be found just outside the city gates of Baghdad.

On arriving to the fields, you can see the seeds that you have bought in the top left hand corner of the game screen. Click on one of the seeds to start growing spices. After seeing the spice grow you harvest it and you can see the spice in your inventory.

Now you can sell the spice at a profit to the bazaar merchant. Before you start to play the game for yourself, you might want to visit the Baghdad palace.

There is a limit to how much spices you can store at the fields, but you can contact the bazaar merchant about buying warehouses.

Step 10

Go to the palace using the city map. You can find the palace just left to the Bazaar, click on the building to enter.

Once you have been granted access to the Sultan's palace, you can see the Sultan's official in front of you. Talk to him and you will see a few options available to you. As you can see, the Sultan's official is the person you need to talk to, if you want a travel permit so you can get out of Baghdad.

Unfortunately, the travel permit is probably beyond your means right now, as it costs 500 silver dirhams. You can come back at any time, once you have enough money, and talk to the official again to purchase a travel permit.

Transportation around the world is done by walking, riding a horse, travelling in a caravan, sailing a boat or flying (more on that later).

Enjoy!

Well, there you have it. Now you have the essential survival skills in the world of Spice Trade.

We hope you experience an interesting journey.
